Tour at a glance

Punta Mita Experience’s private Lovers Beach tour leaves from Marina Punta Mita, in Nayarit, the closest port to Islas Marietas National Park: 9 km (about 5.6 miles). The boat is just for your group, from 1 to 13 people, with a captain and guide, and you choose the departure time between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM, Tuesday to Sunday. The tour lasts 3 hours. Lovers Beach, also known as Hidden Beach (Playa del Amor or Playa Escondida in Spanish), lies inside a crater open to the sky: you swim 80 m (260 ft) through a natural tunnel with a mandatory life jacket and stay 30 minutes. CONANP limits access to 116 people a day; your booking guarantees a permit for each person in your group. The price is per boat, and the cost per person drops as the group grows. Snorkeling, the Puente de Piedra stone arch and Playa La Nopalera are included. Minimum age: 10.

What is Lovers Beach?

A sandy beach hidden inside a cavity open to the sky on Isla Redonda, in Islas Marietas National Park, off Punta Mita. There is no way in by land or by boat: you can only enter by swimming about 80 m (260 ft) through a natural tunnel from the open sea. It is the same beach many people know as Hidden Beach, and in Spanish as Playa del Amor or Playa Escondida.

The boat is all yours

Your group, from 1 to 13 people, with a captain and guide. The guide paces the stops to suit you, within the 3 hours and the park rules.

Entrance to the Lovers Beach tunnel on Isla Redonda

The access tunnel

About 80 m (260 ft) of swimming from the open sea, with a mandatory life jacket. The guide swims with your group and carries a float ring for anyone who isn’t a strong swimmer.

Sand of Lovers Beach inside the crater open to the sky

The beach in the crater

The boat is private, but the beach isn’t: park rangers organize entry in groups of up to 15 people, 30 minutes each, within the limit of 116 visitors a day.

Playa La Nopalera on Isla Larga, Marietas Islands

Snorkeling and Playa La Nopalera

Snorkeling at one of the sites the park allows and a landing on the sandy stretch of Playa La Nopalera, on the north side of Isla Larga.

In May 2016, CONANP closed the beach because of damage to the coral. When it reopened in August that year, it set the limit that still applies: 116 people a day and 30 minutes per visit.

How the tour works

The order of the stops changes with the tide, park ranger instructions and the captain’s judgment. Since the boat is just for your group, the guide paces each stop to suit you, within the 3 hours and the park rules.

01Arrival at Marina Punta Mita
15 minutes before your time

We meet you at the marina meeting point. Check-in, wristbands, life jackets and a safety briefing, just with your group, before boarding.

02Boat ride to the Marietas Islands
About 15 minutes

We set off at the time you chose. It’s 9 km (about 5.6 miles) from the marina to Islas Marietas National Park, the shortest distance from any port in Banderas Bay.

03Tour around the islands

We sail around the volcanic formations of Isla Larga and Isla Redonda. We see the Puente de Piedra stone arch and the blue-footed booby nesting area from the boat; with the boat to yourselves, you can ask to stop for photos.

04Snorkeling at an authorized site

With mask, snorkel and life jacket, at one of the sites the park designates. No fins, to protect the coral. Anyone who’d rather not swim at this stop can stay on board.

05Landing at Playa La Nopalera

We step ashore on the sandy part of the beach, on the north side of Isla Larga, the only stretch where the park’s management program allows landings.

06Entering Lovers Beach
30 minutes

You swim about 80 m (260 ft) through the tunnel, with a life jacket and the guide beside you. Inside you have 30 minutes, the time set by CONANP, in a slot organized by the park rangers.

07Return to the marina
3 hours after departure

Boat ride back to Marina Punta Mita. You arrive about 3 hours after departure: around 11:00 AM if you left at 8:00 AM, around 6:00 PM if you left at 3:00 PM.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the private Lovers Beach tour and what time does it leave?

It lasts 3 hours. You choose the departure time between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM, Tuesday to Sunday, depending on availability in the calendar. Please arrive 15 minutes early. Entering the beach depends on the tide: if the tide expected at your time makes it difficult, we’ll suggest an adjustment by WhatsApp or email as early as possible. There are no departures on Mondays because the park is closed.

Are Lovers Beach and Hidden Beach the same beach?

Yes. It’s the same beach inside a crater on Isla Redonda, in Islas Marietas National Park. It’s called Lovers Beach or Hidden Beach in English, and Playa del Amor or Playa Escondida in Spanish. The access rules are the same whatever the name: 116 visitors a day, a 30-minute stay and entry by swimming through a tunnel.

Is access to Lovers Beach guaranteed?

Your booking guarantees, for the date you chose, the boat for your group and a Lovers Beach access permit for each person, within the 116 spots available each day. What we can’t control is the sea:

  • If the tide makes entry difficult at your time, we’ll suggest an adjustment by WhatsApp or email.
  • If the forecast or the authorities say it isn’t safe to go out, or the Port Authority closes the port, we let you know as early as possible so you can change the date at no cost or get a full refund.
  • If the tour goes out but, once at the islands, the swell doesn’t allow entry to the beach, we complete the rest of the tour and refund $100 USD for each person who paid for the full tour and couldn’t go in.

The last case is unlikely: we monitor sea conditions and official notices before every departure.

How much does the private Lovers Beach tour cost?

The price is per boat, not per person. The base rate covers 1 to 2 people and each additional person, up to 13, adds to the total; the cost per person drops as the group grows. Your group’s price appears in the quote tool at the top of this page, along with the full price table. It includes the park access wristbands and the Lovers Beach access permit: there are no extra fees at the dock.

What’s included?
  • Private boat with captain and guide, just for your group.
  • A tour of the park with entry to Lovers Beach, a landing at Playa La Nopalera, a view of the Puente de Piedra stone arch, blue-footed booby watching and snorkeling at an authorized site.
  • Snorkeling gear (mask and snorkel) and life jacket.
  • Water and soft drinks.
  • Park access wristbands and a guaranteed Lovers Beach access permit.

There are no extra fees at the dock.

How is this different from the shared tour?

On the private tour the boat is just for your group, you choose the departure time between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM and the price is per boat. On the version on a shared boat, you travel with other visitors (up to 13 people), the standard departure is at 12:00 PM and you pay per person. The beach, the swim and the 30 minutes inside are the same on both.

Will the beach be just for my group?

No. The boat is private, but Lovers Beach is a protected natural area with a daily limit shared among all operators. Park rangers organize entry in groups of up to 15 people, 30 minutes each, so there may be visitors from other boats on the sand at the same time as your group.

Who is the private tour for?

For couples who want to experience the beach without sharing the boat, such as for an anniversary, a honeymoon or a recent engagement; for families with children aged 10 or older; and for groups of friends of up to 13 people. If you’d prefer a cooler time of day, you can leave as early as 8:00 AM.

What is the age requirement for Lovers Beach?

The minimum age is 10, with no exceptions, because of the 80 m (260 ft) swim. There is no fixed maximum age: from 65 on, we recommend the tour for people who are in good physical condition and comfortable swimming 80 m (260 ft) with a life jacket.

Who can’t take part?

Children under 10, pregnant women, people with reduced mobility and people with back, neck or heart problems. If you have any other medical condition, please write to us before booking.

Do I need to know how to swim to enter Lovers Beach?

You need to feel comfortable in the water to swim about 80 m (260 ft), partly through a natural tunnel. The life jacket is mandatory and lets you float and rest at any time. The guide swims with your group and carries a float ring to help anyone who isn’t a strong swimmer.

How long do I spend inside Lovers Beach?

30 minutes, the same on the private tour as on the shared one. That’s the maximum time per slot set by CONANP so that all 116 visitors of the day can go in.

What are the options if someone in the group is under 10?

That person can’t enter Lovers Beach. If the group wants to go together, there is a private tour for families with children under 10, where only those who meet the requirements go into the beach and the rest wait on board. There is also the tour without the access swim, which visits the same islands with snorkeling, the Puente de Piedra stone arch and Playa La Nopalera, with no minimum age.

How far in advance should I book?

You can book up to 24 hours before departure, but we recommend booking at least 2 weeks ahead, especially in high season and for weekends: Lovers Beach’s daily limit of 116 people is shared among all operators, and the most popular times fill up first.

How do I get to Marina Punta Mita? Is there parking?

By car, the marina is about 25 minutes from Sayulita and from Bucerías, 45 minutes from Nuevo Vallarta and between 1 hour and 1 hour 30 minutes from Puerto Vallarta, depending on the area. There is a small free parking lot at the marina; if it’s full, you can park on the street in front of it.

Is hotel transportation included?

No. The tour starts at Marina Punta Mita. If you need transportation, we can arrange it on WhatsApp for an additional charge, which depends on where you’re staying and how many people are in your group.

What should I bring?
  • Swimsuit already on, towel and a change of clothes.
  • Cap and sunglasses.
  • Biodegradable sunscreen, applied at least 30 minutes before getting in the water.
  • Cash for the marina restroom (MXN $10), since the boat has no restroom.
  • If you want to take your phone to the beach, a waterproof pouch; they’re sold at the marina.

You can bring snacks, but they can’t be eaten inside the park.

What wildlife can we see?

Year-round, blue-footed boobies and reef fish. From December to March, humpback whales may appear on the way to the islands, and sometimes dolphins, but this is wildlife and sightings are not guaranteed. If seeing whales is your goal, the whale watching tour runs from December 10 to March 22.

Can I cancel or change the date? What happens if the weather is bad?
  • If you cancel more than 24 hours in advance, we refund 100%. Within that same window you can also change the date or time at no cost, subject to availability.
  • With less than 24 hours’ notice, or if you don’t show up, there is no refund.
  • If the Port Authority closes the port due to weather, you choose between another date or a full refund. During hurricane season there can be intermittent closures; we let you know as early as possible.
  • Refunds go back to the original payment method and take 5 to 10 business days.
